Paniolo cowboys predate the American cowboy and originated in the 1700s under King Kamehameha I. The Hawaiian paniolos wrangle longhorn cattle and developed their own cowboy songs. Gary Haleamau + Kāwili share some of these songs, along with history, oli, mele, and hula.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Gary Haleamau & Kāwili Las Vegas, NV
Kāwili – Translation: To mix ingredients, blend, entwined, interwoven, interlaced ~ with individual gifts of music and dance; in Aloha. Gary Kawiliau Haleamau of Kailua-Kona, Hawaii began his musical career at an early age; first as a solo artist then traveling with Hawaiian music groups throughout the world sharing his amazing talent. He recorded his first single release at the age of 12 and 14 plus album length recordings. Gary is a recipient of “2008 Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award for “Best Religious Album of the Year” and together with his wife, received the Nevada Heritage Award in 2015. Sheldeen Kaleimomi Haleamau of Hanapēpē, Kauaʻi, began her hula career at a young age and has travelled the world sharing her gift of hula. She is a former Miss Aloha Hula and founder of Hālau Hula o Kaleimomi in Las Vegas, Nevada. Sheldeen has accompanied her husband Gary on numerous recordings and enjoys sharing music with her family. Kurin Pomaika’imaikeakua Haleamau of Las Vegas, Nevada, is the son of Gary and Sheldeen Haleamau. Kurin, a gifted singer-musician, was a recipient of the Folklife Apprenticeship grant from the Nevada Arts Council in 2008. Since then, Kurin has excelled in his musical career as an accomplished record producer, slack-key guitarist, bass guitarist and vocalist with Kāwili. In 2018, Kāwili released their first album length recording “Pilipaʻa”.
